In the Wake of Sandy, Books

The AFT and First Book—a nonprofit that has distributed more than 90 million new books to children across the United States—have joined forces with New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) to help encourage a culture of reading for low-income and middle-class students.

This video features AFT’s team-up with First Book to place books in the homes of the children of Freeport, N.Y., a community devastated by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Amidst the May 21st election results there is an important story that must be told. It's the story of working people running for office and being elected to lead their communities. Up and down the state, union members who work in the public and the private sector, who are currently working and those who are retired, who have served before and those who are stepping up for the first time, won their elections.

Organizing Press Conference

Union members across Oregon are trying something new - and it's working. Oregon has seen union membership increase most of the last five years, even as states across the country see more and more unorganized workers struggling to make ends meet. But union members in Oregon decided they needed to do more to help workers who were interested in forming a union on the job.

Read the National AFL-CIO's blog post about this exciting press conference.
