Throwing Bricks Through Glass Ceilings

In 1973, 21-year-old Barbara Moore became the first woman to enter the apprenticeship program of Bricklayers (BAC) Local 1 of Maryland. A couple of decades later, she served as both president of the former local and as Baltimore chapter chair of BAC Local 1 MD/VA/DC.

“A lot of people thought I wouldn’t make it this long,” Moore said at a ceremony honoring her 25 years of union membership in 1998. Read the full article>>>

When President Barack Obama first announced his candidacy for president, he said: “I am running in this race because of what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called ‘the fierce urgency of now.’ Because I believe that there’s such a thing as being too late. And that hour is almost upon us.” Like Dr. King, our president was calling on America to make real the promises of our democracy. As affiliated unions wrap up their endorsement processes delegates to Monday night's meeting voted on what may be the final round of recommendations leading up to the Oregon AFL-CIO's last COPE Board meeting of the 2014 election cycle.

Recommendations included multiple ballot measures, and join the list of previous measure and candidate recomendations our delegates have made.

“Too many voters are being disenfranchised in this country, and much of it is intentional,” said Oregon AFL-CIO President Tom Chamberlain. “In too many states we have seen calculated efforts to lower voter registration, the deliberate spreading of misinformation, improper purging of voter rolls and more. What’s worse is that the Supreme Court failed to stand up for voting rights just months ago.”
