Weekly Update: Trade that works FOR us.
Trade that Works FOR Us
United States trade representatives are negotiating the biggest trade agreement in our history, the Trans-Pacific Partnership Free Trade Agreement (TPP FTA). As we’ve written in recent updates, US Trade Representative Ron Kirk has kept negotiations around the TPP FTA behind closed doors, and he’s only let in select corporate lobbyists whose industries have a stake in the outcome. Kirk seems to have forgotten that workers have a stake as well.
Working families and the American middle class have been hurt by so-called “Free Trade Agreements” in the past. Our lopsided trade deal with China in 2001 lead to nearly 3 million jobs lost and NAFTA has cost hundreds of thousands more while hurting workers in our NAFTA-partner, Mexico, as well. It’s clear that “Free Trade” isn’t working for anyone but CEOs and Big Business.
Our elected leaders can do better on trade by making sure these agreements work for all of us, instead of lopsidedly benefiting multinational corporations who just want cheap labor and a quick buck. Click here to sign a national petition to urge President Obama and Trade Representative Ron Kirk to make sure these deals work for the workers and the middle class, and help us recovers our economic strength.

Talk Trade with Senator Jeff Merkley on July 10th
It’s crucial that we bring jobs home, and rebuild our economy – rather than ship more and more jobs overseas. Our Senator Jeff Merkley has been advocating for policies like this to help the middle class since his first week in the Senate, and he believes we can do more for Oregon’s workers and to keep jobs and manufacturing in the United States.
Don’t miss the chance to talk trade with Senator Merkley on Tuesday, July 10th at 5:00pm. Senator Merkley is joining us for a town-hall format conference call about the important Bring Jobs Home Act (S. 2884).
You must RSVP using a valid email address to participate in the town hall. Click here to sign up and expect instructions about calling in to be emailed to you once your RSVP is received.
