Direct Care Workers Raise Voices at Care Congress

700 union members - care workers, case managers and others in the direct care industry - gathered in Washington D.C. yesterday to kick-off the Caring Across Generations campaign. Direct care workers perform essential duties for those whose need is highest in our country:  the young, the disabled and the elderly.

Despite the absolute necessity for these services, direct caregivers are a very vulnerable workforce.  They do not have adequate legal protection, which can limit wages, benefits and training for direct caregivers.  They need a strong voice in the workplace to protect their rights, which is exactly what the Caring Across Generations campaign aims to do. Learn more about the campaign here.

In Oregon many childcare workers, homecare workers, and those who provide care for the disabled are union members.

Canceled:  July 22nd Congressional Town Hall Event

With no end in sight to the debt ceiling debate, our Congressmen are still working on a compromise. Unfortunately, this means the town hall event on July 22nd that we mentioned in the last Weekly Update is canceled.  Congress must find a solution that doesn’t balance the budget on the backs of the middle class. What are you hoping to see happen before August 2nd? Head to www.facebook.com/oregonaflcio and let us know!
