An Oregon Senator wants to
Repeal Measures 66 & 67?
We had to show you this:
Senator Olsen is right. This must be a jobs session. But what will it take to create jobs?
A few elected officials, with talking points from corporate lobbyists, are convinced that tax breaks will create jobs - lower Capital Gains taxes, lower income taxes for the richest Oregonians, lower business taxes, tax breaks for any Oregonian who already has more than enough. **Newsflash** - when the wealthiest Americans get tax breaks they invest that money in stocks and bonds and multinational corporations, put it away in savings, and take it out of circulation.
What's worse, that money will come directly out of our state budget and out of the pockets of our teachers, nurses, and service providers. That's right: these tax breaks for the wealthy can actually lead to higher unemployment.
If we're going to create jobs, any incentives must be tied directly to jobs created - with a clawback so that if the jobs don't last the money has to be returned. And it can't happen at the expense of good middle class jobs like teachers, firefighters, or the people who keep our water clean, drive our buses and keep our state running.
Real job creation must be the goal. It's time to take that goal back and work to build a strong economy that works for us all!

The Columbia River Crossing Needs your Help.
The Columbia River Crossing - the replacement Interstate 5 bridge over the Columbia and a series of exits on each side of it - has been in the works for almost ten years. After a series of public hearings this past year Oregon and Washington have a good outline that takes into account much of the public feedback, while ensuring the bridge will serve our region's needs well into the future.
And the best part? It'll create over 20,000 jobs - through construction jobs now, and by allowing our industrial base to grow and our location as an important shipping hub to expand in the long run.
Much of this project will be paid for by a large grant from Congress. But they need to hear from us that we're ready to move forward on the project. The Legislature in Oregon is considering a bill, HJM 22, that lays out the basics of the project and commits Oregon to moving forward (although it still leaves many of the details open for us to decide as we move forward) and calls on Congress to keep their funds on the table. This bill is crucial if we want to be able to access a federal grant.
Unfortunately, groups aiming to prevent this project from moving forward are trying to kill the bill. Email or call your Representative and let them know there's still time to work out many of the details, but we have to keep moving forward to gain crucial funding - and that means we need them to vote yes on HJM 22.
